At a recent meeting of renowned filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, he dispelled the long-standing debate on the origins of the “Pan-India Superstar” phenomenon. While much has been made of his Baahubali movie which united the masses of India, Rajamouli was quick to say that Salman Khan was the true pioneer.

Rajamouli said that movies like Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) and Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994) were not just hits in one region but became massive phenomena across India and the audiences were from all parts of India before the term “Pan-India” even existed. These films, with their universal themes of love, family, and emotion, transcended language barriers and established Salman Khan as a household name nationwide.

Rajamouli called Salman Khan the original, undisputed Pan-India Superstar and highlighted how the actor’s early films set the stage for the idea of nationwide appeal. And while Baahubali was indeed a landmark of Indian cinema, the seeds of pan-Indian stardom were planted decades earlier by Salman Khan’s work, he said.

Salman Khan’s rise in the late 80s and 90s was marked by a singular ability to connect with people across cultural and linguistic lines. Maine Pyar Kiya not only resonated in Hindi-speaking regions but also in dubbed versions across South India; Hum Aapke Hain Koun made family entertainment a whole lot more fun and set box office records that went on for years.

Rajamouli’s statement came as an instant reaction from many fans and industry professionals who feel that Salman’s early films were the bedrock to define the concept of a national superstar and have inspired such a national superstar in the media and the industry to think about Salman’s work. Salman’s movies, in an era of multiplexes and digital platforms, were able to unite audiences in single-screen theatres across India as a whole, proving the universal power of storytelling and star charisma.

All in all, Rajamouli’s recognition of Salman Khan as the first Pan-India Superstar is an acknowledgment of the actor’s role as a pioneer who connected the country via cinema to the world. Salman Bhai was already owning it long before the label became a thing, and his films are still great living examples of cinema being able to transcend boundaries.
