The Delhi High Court has extended the trial date for the actor Salman Khan’s lawsuit to July 1, 2026, so that the film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy has been delayed to resolve his case as his name is on the backburner—and the film’s release is going to happen because he has been in past controversies.

Salman Khan’s legal team contends that the film’s teaser and promotional material depict a character resembling him, complete with his signature turquoise bracelet and firearm imagery, which they say mislead audiences by linking the project to the 1998 blackbuck poaching case. His counsel Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi sought interim relief but the court ordered Khan’s team to make written pleadings to respondents and deferred the matter.

The filmmakers, led by director Bharat S. Shrinate, said they needed more time to respond and said they had only received the application. They defended the project, saying that the film isn’t based on Salman Khan’s life. And Shrinate said Khan “isn’t God” and cannot stop the release of this film. The team also said they had received death threats on the project and filed an FIR for protection.

The court’s refusal to grant interim relief means the film’s promotions can continue until the next hearing. This calls attention to the growing debate around celebrity personality rights in India, where prominent figures are increasingly seeking legal protection against unauthorized use of their identity. Salman Khan’s petition highlights concerns about commercial exploitation, while the filmmakers stress their freedom of creative expression.

The outcome of the case could set an important precedent for the entertainment industry, balancing the rights of celebrities with filmmakers’ artistic liberties. With the next hearing scheduled for July 1, 2026, both sides are preparing for a detailed legal battle that will be closely watched by fans, industry insiders and legal experts alike.

And finally, the Delhi High Court’s postponement leaves Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy’s fate uncertain. Salman Khan wants to keep his name and reputation good and the filmmakers want to protect their creative rights. In the next hearing that we are going to have to wait for, the Indian courts will have to make a better distinction between celebrity identity and artistic expression.
