The upcoming film Prahaar has already presented one of the most controversial questions in India’s recent history: why did it take so long to hang Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist of the 26/11 Mumbai attack?

The movie, with Rajkummar Rao playing Ujjwal Nikam, the special public prosecutor who handled the case, tells the untold story of the judicial process, political factors, and the long journey to justice from Rajkummar Rao’s perspective. Kasab’s trial has been one of India’s highest profile cases, marked by years of hearings, appeals, and international attention. Why did the execution take almost four years after the conviction of Kasab to take place, and Prahaar would like to show how those processes were complicated and the whole story is to be told in the film as well as the difficult things that might have held up the process for the longest time after his conviction, and what made the country wait for him to be executed.

Nikam’s struggle to see justice not only delivered but also that it was fair and transparent. Rajkummar Rao, who has played Nikam’s character in previous films and is one of the most powerful and emotionally driven actors in the Indian theatre community, will play the character. And so, his role will also shine light on the tough balancing act—between public opinion, legal procedures, and global diplomatic considerations.

The film also looks at how the 26/11 attacks as a whole shaped the world and the trauma that Mumbai suffered and the resilience that emerged. Prahaar, in the legal aftermath, gives a new perspective to a story often told through terror and tragedy.

Prahaar, which will be released on August 7, 2026, is courtroom drama and human emotion and hopes to answer those lingering questions through the lens of the people who fought for justice. Rajkummar Rao is the lead actor and will make it resonate deeply with those who have experienced the events and people who hope to know how Kasab got sentenced.

That is to say, Prahaar isn’t just a movie; it’s a retelling of history from the perspective of justice, resilience, and truth.
