Kiran Rao: Aamir Became More Involved After Divorce

Kiran Rao has shared some of her parenting experiences with her former husband Aamir Khan in her book, and how she learned to parent her son Azad Rao Khan when she and Aamir went their separate ways. She has opened up on co-parenting, shared responsibility, and having a good family after they were divorced.
As for Aamir Khan’s role as a father in their marriage, Kiran said that he was “a very busy father” and how he had to deal with his work schedule as one of Bollywood’s biggest stars and the pressure of day-to-day parenting was “very hard.”
According to Kiran, most of the parenting responsibilities in their marriage were handled by her. She said she managed most aspects of Azad's upbringing and supervised the attention she gave her son while Aamir worked his way into his career.
From her perspective, Kiran said that Aamir started to get involved in Azad’s life after their separation. She added that he was more involved with their son and was more involved in parenting after they split up.
With the separation, Kiran said both parents remain committed to ensuring Azad grows up in a loving and supportive environment. “They truly were concerned about their son’s happiness and how he was treated as a person,” she said.
Kiran's most reassuring comment was about their commitment to co-parenting. “Wherever we live, we won’t be far away,” she said, indicating that both she and Aamir have consciously chosen to remain geographically close so that Azad can continue to feel the love and support of both parents.
The ex-couple separated in 2021 after more than 15 years together, which was a surprise to many fans, but they both assured us that they would be working professionally together and raising their son together. Since then they have been seen together at family events, movie-related events, and public appearances of Azad.
Their relationship has been cited as an example of amicable co-parenting: Kiran and Aamir have had such camaraderie despite ending their marriage. They have always maintained that their family is united in raising their son.
Kiran’s recent comments on social media have drawn mixed reactions. Though some appreciated her frankness about the reality of parenting, and the difficulty of marriage and work and family life and the hard work of juggling the two, others appreciated the couple’s good relationship after divorce.
The conversation also underscores a larger debate about modern parenting, where responsibilities are more or less shared in the family and the family dynamics are evolving, much as we are as parents.
